Forestry Management Course Offered
Got questions about
managing a woods? How to keep it healthy? When to sell timber and to
whom? We’ve got answers! A forestry course consisting of three classes and
a field day is being offered in Greene County beginning on September 8,
2009. The three classroom sessions are on Tuesday evenings, from 6:30 PM to
9:00 PM on Sept 8, 22, and October 6. The sessions will be held at the IDNR
Division of Reclamation office in Jasonville, IN. The field day will be on
Saturday, October 10, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM at a woods in Greene County.
Pre-registration is required, and the fee is $20.00/person or
$25.00/couple, due by September 4 to the Greene County SWCD office.
These sessions will
benefit timberland owners, educators, policy makers and those with small
tracts living in rural areas who wish to better understand the science
behind woodland management.
The first session on
September 8 will feature Purdue University foresters Ron Rathfon
and Don Carlson. The session will feature a general introduction to
forestry, forest management utilizing timber stand improvement/tree planting
practices, and tree improvement within the woodlot.
Session two will be on
September 22 and will focus on invasive plant and insect species
that threaten Indiana hardwood production. Jodie Ellis of the Purdue
Department of Entomology will discuss invasive insects. Spencer Goehl of Eco
Logic Co. in Bloomington will discuss the many invasive plant species that
threaten the forest ecosystem. Many of these species are unknowingly planted
by landowners seeking wildlife habitat, completely unaware of the effect
upon forest species diversity.
Session three will be on
October 6, featuring the topic of timber marketing and sales.
Jeremiah Lemmons, IDNR District Forester will provide an overview of selling
timber. Stu Haney, a consulting forester from Riley, and a local timber
buyer will provide insight on timber markets and marketing strategies. They
will help landowners understand how to make their forests profitable while
not compromising productivity.
The field day on
Saturday, Oct. 10 will bring all the classroom work together, with a
“hands on” experience in the woods from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Lunch will be
provided.
The training is sponsored
by Greene, Clay, Owen & Sullivan County Soil & Water Conservation Districts,
Indiana Department of Natural Resources/Division of Forestry, Purdue
University, Sycamore Trails Resource Conservation & Development (RC&D)
Council, Four Rivers RC&D Area, Busseron Creek Watershed Partnership,
